Study to Stay: The Non-ED Visa in Thailand
Want to stay in Thailand longer without going through a work or retirement visa? The Non-Immigrant ED (Education) visa is an option that attracts many expats. Learning Thai, enrolling in a Muay Thai school, taking cooking classes, or attending a university — all of this can justify a student visa.
But be careful: the Non-ED visa has its rules, pitfalls, and limitations. It's a legitimate visa for those who really want to study, not a plan B to stay indefinitely without doing anything. Immigration has tightened controls in recent years. Here's everything you need to know.
The Different Types of Eligible Studies
The Non-ED visa covers several types of educational programs:
Thai Language Courses
This is the most common case for expats. You enroll in a language school accredited by the Ministry of Education, and the school provides you with the necessary documents for the visa.
- Typical duration: programs of 6 months to 1 year, renewable
- Course frequency: generally 2 to 4 hours per week minimum
- Cost: 20,000 to 40,000 THB per year for the courses alone (~520 to 1,050 €)
- Required level: none — you can start from scratch
Expat tip: choose a school that really teaches. Some "schools" are visa factories where no one learns anything — and these are the ones that immigration monitors closely. A good Thai school is also a chance to learn a fascinating language and better understand the local culture.
Martial Arts (Muay Thai, Boxing)
Thailand is the Mecca of Muay Thai, and many practitioners come to train long-term. The Non-ED visa is possible for training in an accredited camp.
- Condition: the camp must have approval from the Ministry of Education (not just be a private gym)
- Frequency: regular training required
- Cost: variable depending on the camp (30,000 to 80,000 THB per year)
Universities and International Schools
For higher education (bachelor's, master's, doctorate) or programs in international schools:
- Recognized universities directly provide the documents for the visa
- The process is more formal and more solid in the eyes of immigration
- No question about "legitimacy" — this is the intended use case of the visa
Cooking Classes, Thai Massage, Meditation
Some specialized programs are eligible, provided the school is accredited by the ministry. Thai cooking classes of a few days obviously don't count — you need a structured program over several months.
Conditions and Eligibility
To obtain a Non-ED visa, you must:
- Be enrolled in a school or program accredited by the Thai Ministry of Education
- Valid passport for at least 6 months
- Letter of acceptance from the school
- Financial proof: bank statement showing sufficient funds (variable depending on the consulate)
- No criminal record in some cases
- Recent passport photos
Application Procedure
Step 1: Enroll in an Accredited School
This is the starting point. The school must:
- Have an approval from the Ministry of Education (ask to see the certificate)
- Provide an official letter of acceptance
- Prepare the documents for immigration (school-specific form)
Pay the registration and tuition fees. Keep all receipts.
Step 2: Apply for the Non-ED Visa
From France:
- Thai Embassy in Paris with the school letter
- Cost: ~2,000 THB (~55 €)
- Initial duration: 90 days
From a neighboring country:
- Consulates in Laos, Cambodia, or Malaysia
- Same procedure, sometimes faster
Conversion on site: rarer and more difficult. Some immigration offices agree to convert a tourist visa to Non-ED, but this is not guaranteed.
Step 3: Extension on Site
After the first 90 days, you can extend your visa in increments of 90 days or sometimes 1 year (for university programs), as long as you are enrolled and attending classes:
- Extension cost: 1,900 THB per extension
- Documents: school attendance certificate, TM.7 form, photos
- The school must confirm that you are attending classes
How Much Does It Cost in Total?
Here is a realistic budget for a full year on a Non-ED visa (Thai courses):
- Tuition fees: 25,000 to 40,000 THB/year (~650 to 1,050 €)
- Initial Non-ED visa: 2,000 THB (~55 €)
- Extensions: 1,900 THB × 3 to 4 times = 5,700 to 7,600 THB (~150 to 200 €)
- 90-day reporting: free
- Annual total: approximately 35,000 to 50,000 THB (~900 to 1,300 €)
This is one of the most affordable visas to stay in Thailand long-term. Much cheaper than the Thailand Elite, and without the financial conditions of the retirement or marriage visa.
