Thailand: National Mourning, Loy Krathong Under Super Moon, Contested "Treaty" with Cambodia, and a Snake... in an ATM

A week of contrasts in Thailand: tribute to the Queen Mother, confirmation of Loy Krathong under a super moon, controversy surrounding a Thai-Cambodian agreement mentioned with the presence of Donald Trump, a boost to purchasing power, and a venomous news item.

Informed by the video journal JTPT (Journal Télévisé pour la Thaïlande - Television Journal for Thailand), verified and contextualized by us. This week, the kingdom oscillated between national mourning and daily life resuming its course: funeral of the Queen Mother, continuation of Loy Krathong, rumors of diplomacy with twists and turns with Cambodia, very concrete purchasing power measures, capricious weather... and a snake lurking in an ATM. Story, landmarks, and verifications.

A Country in Black: What the Passing of the Queen Mother Changes

According to the weekly edition of JTPT, Thailand has entered a period of national mourning after the announcement of the death of Queen Mother Sirikit (transcribed as "Syriikit" in the broadcast). In the streets, panels and posters of tribute are flourishing; on television, images of the funeral ceremony recalled the attachment of a large part of the population to the royal figure. The authorities, according to JTPT, speak of a year of mourning, the manifestations of which remain mainly protocolary and symbolic: a more sober tone in public events, black or neutral clothing for ceremonies, official communications imbued with respect.

This framework does not block cultural life. The prevailing line: decorum. The festivities are held, but restraint is favored. Several local authorities have recalled this, inviting people to limit the ostentatious nature of certain celebrations and to place tribute at the heart of the moment.

Loy Krathong Maintained: Lanterns, Wishes, and... Super Moon

Many feared a cancellation. Loy Krathong, one of the kingdom's most popular festivals, is confirmed for November 5 and 6 (dates mentioned by JTPT). Throughout the country, krathong – small boats woven from leaves and flowers, carrying candles and incense – will be placed on the water to symbolically let go of sorrows and resentments, and to make wishes for loved ones. In Chiang Mai, the expected spectacle remains the myriad of lanterns that rise into the night (in areas where the practice is authorized), an image that has become emblematic.

Particularity of this edition: if the clouds are kind, we will enjoy a super moon. JTPT mentions a distance of 35,696 km – it should read approximately 356,000 km at perigee, a difference that makes the celestial body visually larger and brighter. In Thailand, with the sun setting early at this time, the Moon becomes visible from about 5:30 PM.

Some useful landmarks for a successful and responsible Loy Krathong:

  • Respect for mourning: a sober tone is expected. Avoid aggressive sound devices, favor krathong made of biodegradable materials.
  • Lanterns and drones: inquire about local regulations; several provinces strictly regulate releases near airports and require specific authorizations.
  • Weather: the wet season is extending in some places; anticipate showers and temporary floods.

Pouring Rain and End of the Vegetarian Festival

JTPT recalls that the end of the vegetarian festival – very popular in the South and in Phuket – took place under torrential rain. The monsoon, still active, made coverage on the ground uncertain. Local authorities are multiplying safety instructions: beware of rapid runoff, slippery roads, and sudden storms. Travelers planning interprovincial travel will benefit from monitoring regional bulletins, as rain and winds can disrupt maritime activity and certain connections.

Thailand – Cambodia: A “Peace Treaty” That Raises More Questions Than Answers

The JTPT broadcast claims that a peace agreement was initialed between Thailand and Cambodia during a meeting in Kuala Lumpur, with the presence of Donald Trump. This point is surprising: at the time of publication, no official Thai, Cambodian, or ASEAN communiqué corroborates the holding of such a ceremony in these modalities, nor the presence of the former American president. Caution is therefore required. The sequence deserves to be followed, but it is not documented by government or diplomatic sources accessible to the public.

What JTPT reports, and which we present here with the usual quotation marks:

  • Withdrawal of heavy weapons from border areas in three phases: November 1st (multiple rocket launchers), November 22nd (artillery ≤ 150 mm) and December 13th (armored vehicles and tanks).
  • Supervision by a team of ASEAN observers.
  • Strengthened cooperation against “call center” scam networks operating from Cambodia.
  • Demining and gradual resumption of good neighborly diplomatic relations.

On the ground, détente is not a given. JTPT mentions demonstrations by activists on the Thai side and reports, on the Cambodian side, an accusation against the Thai army regarding an explosive device that allegedly caused the death of a ten-year-old child and injured his father. The Thai army has denied possessing this type of ammunition. At this stage, the incident remains not independently verified, the two p...
