Superb pastries that rival those from a good bakery back home. Open 4 days a week from 9am. Very reasonable prices.
Baan Bakery Chiang Mai has become a true institution for French expats and lovers of authentic pastries in Thailand, with an exceptional rating of 4.8/5 from 218 reviews. This small bakery in the Haiya district triggers queues from the opening at 9am, and for good reason: the pastries are snapped up in a few hours. Don't be surprised to find the shelves completely empty at 10am or noon.
The pastries at Baan Bakery rival what you find in France. The croissants come out of the oven crispy and buttery, the pains au chocolat melt in your mouth, and the almond pastries are described as exceptional. Several visitors say that these are the best pastries they have ever eaten, some even saying that this bakery continues to haunt them even after they return to their home country.
The bakery also offers an original creation: the Ba Bin revisited as a pastry, a kind of Thai coconut pancake transformed into a viennoiserie. At the first bite, it is not flour that you taste, but pure coconut. The homemade biscuits are also very popular and sell out as quickly as the bread.
Baan Bakery Chiang Mai is not limited to pastries. The coffee is excellent, with unique creations such as the Americano with orange prepared with freshly squeezed tangerines on site. The hot chocolate is described as divine. The atmosphere is fantastic, the space bathed in natural light with a dark wood decoration that creates a warm atmosphere. The path to the bakery is beautiful, adding to the charm of the experience.
Small warning for those who want to sit on the terrace: there are many mosquitoes. Plan to protect yourself if you plan to stay a while. Coffee is only payable in cash, but pastries can be paid by QR code (practical for Koreans and Asian travelers).
Baan Bakery is open only 4 days a week: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from 9am to 3pm. Closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. To put all the chances on your side and enjoy the bread still hot and crispy, arrive at the opening at 9am. At 12pm-1pm, there is usually not much left, and at 2pm, the shelves are often completely empty.
The bakery is located at 20 Rat Chiang Saen Road 1, in the Haiya district of Chiang Mai. Free street parking. Takeaway available, ideal if you want to bring back pastries for the next day (although honestly, they usually don't survive the return trip). Toilets on site. Very reasonable prices for the quality offered, well below what you find in high-end French bakeries in Bangkok.
